What amount of caffeine is excessive? “Charged Lemonade” from Panera raises concerns

Caffeine is safe for most people in moderation, but excessive consumption can be harmful.

Concerns concerning the amount of caffeine in some well-known drinks and what consumers should know about any possible health effects have been brought up in recent news coverage.

According to a lawsuit filed on Monday, a man drank three of Panera Bread’s highly caffeinated “Charged Lemonades” and then experienced a fatal cardiac arrest.

Parents of a college student with a cardiac ailment claimed in October that their daughter passed away following consumption of one of the drinks. According to a Panera representative, the business “stands firmly by the safety of our products” and doesn’t think the lawsuits are justified.

Senator Chuck Schumer called for an investigation by the Food and Drug Administration earlier this year due to his concerns regarding the high caffeine content of PRIME Energy drinks.

Medical professionals also cautioned against children drinking PRIME drinks, a popular brand among teens and preteens that was co-founded by YouTuber Logan Paul, even though the drinks’ product labels state that children under the age of 18 shouldn’t drink them.

The American Academy of Pediatrics states that children under the age of 12 should avoid caffeine consumption as there is no known safe dosage for them.

The group also states that kids and teenagers should not drink energy drinks of any kind and that kids between the ages of 12 and 18 shouldn’t consume more than 100 mg of caffeine per day.

According to Dr. Mallika Marshall, who spoke with CBS News Boston, children are particularly susceptible to the negative health effects of excessive caffeine consumption, which include high blood pressure, anxiety, jitteriness, anxiety, disturbed sleep, and digestive issues.

Children who have undiagnosed or underlying cardiac conditions may be particularly vulnerable to this.

According to the FDA, healthy adults over the age of 18 can typically ingest up to 400 milligrams of caffeine—roughly four or five cups of coffee—per day without experiencing any harmful side effects.

“However, there is wide variation in both how sensitive people are to the effects of caffeine and how fast they metabolize it (break it down),” according to the agency.

According to the FDA, consuming too much caffeine can result in headaches, nausea, upset stomach, jitters, anxiety, fast heartbeat, and an overall unhappy feeling.

According to Allegheny Health Network physician Randy Peters, toxicity from caffeine can happen at even higher dosages of 1,200 milligrams or more, as reported by CBS News Pittsburgh.

“Now we’re talking about outright (heart) palpitations, tremors, shakiness, maybe even panic attacks, if not anxiety,” Peters cautioned.

All of these beverages have a high caffeine content.

The lawsuits against the company and their website both state that a large, 30-ounce Mango Yuzu Citrus Charged Lemonade has 124 grams of sugar and 390 milligrams of caffeine.

The same product and size were listed on another Panera website as having 235 milligrams of caffeine and 74 grams of sugar. According to Panera, the same product without ice has higher caffeine and sugar content.

On Panera’s website, the amounts of caffeine for a standard 20-ounce serving range from 157 to 260 milligrams.

In contrast, there are roughly 100 milligrams of caffeine in a cup of coffee. “That’s an 8-ounce cup of coffee, not a grande with three shots of espresso,” Peters said.

There are 160 milligrams of caffeine in a 16-ounce can of Monster Energy drink and 80 milligrams in an 8.4-ounce can of Red Bull.

Panera’s website now features a banner above the drink options that reads, “Consume in moderation.” “NOT RECOMMENDED FOR children, people sensitive to caffeine, pregnant or nursing women.”
