As anticipated, IDPH Director Dr. Sameer Vohra stated in a news release that respiratory viruses, such as COVID-19, the flu, and RSV, have been more common recently in Illinois and across the country.
The most recent data available from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention indicates that during the week ending Nov. 25, 1,039 hospitalizations were recorded, a 20% increase from the week before.

Hospitalization rates were elevated in forty-four of Illinois’ 102 counties, including Kankakee County, which is located near Chicago.
IDPH is recommending that masks be used in patient care areas in all healthcare settings throughout the state due to the increase in respiratory illnesses.

This is especially important if patients are being cared for who have compromised immune systems. The CDC advises that when COVID-19 levels are higher, universal masking should be taken into consideration for the entire facility, for higher-risk areas, or for specific patient populations.

According to the CDC, people should continue using a mask or respirator even if a facility does not require them.
This decision should be based on personal preference and their perceived risk of infection based on their recent activities and likelihood of developing a serious illness.

The number of medical facilities in the Chicago area that have reinstituted mask policies in response to an increase in respiratory illnesses is unknown.

Vohra advised locals to take precautions to ensure the safety and well-being of their families, such as donning masks in public areas, washing their hands frequently, and, if they are eligible, obtaining the COVID, flu, and RSV vaccinations.
“These tools are especially critical for those most at-risk for severe disease including those who are over 65, immunocompromised, or have chronic medical conditions…” according to him.

“And considering that many areas of the state have limited pediatric ICU capacity, parents and caregivers, please also protect those young children.”
