Poison control centers receive 1,500% more calls regarding drugs used for weight loss.
The number of calls to poison control centers across the country regarding injectable weight-loss drugs containing semaglutide—a drug used to control diabetes—has increased by 1,500%.

Wegovy is indicated for weight loss, and Ozempic is approved for diabetes.
The centers reported nearly 3,000 related calls in November of 2023, a 15-fold increase from 2019.
The abundance of positive testimonies from celebrities who took semaglutide-based medications and lost weight led to the U.S.
Food and Drug Administration acknowledging a semaglutide shortage a year ago. Many patients resorted to non-FDA-approved compounded versions of the medications due to shortages in supply. As a medicine “recipe,” the ingredients are combined instead.

Drug compounding pharmacies are authorized to prepare medication for patients if it satisfies the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act requirements, as stated by Health News.
The recent overdose symptoms may have been exacerbated by compounded versions, which require the patient to measure their own dosage.
Customers were cautioned by the FDA about potential hazards and were advised to purchase the medication in approved forms whenever possible.

However, people still purchase compounded versions due to their accessibility and lower out-of-pocket expenses, according to Health News.
At least two online vendors received warning letters from the FDA instructing them to cease operations, according to CNN.

The pharmaceutical company Novo Nordisk, which manufactures Wegovy and Ozempic, has filed lawsuits against six medical spas, weight-loss clinics, and medical clinics to prevent them from dispensing their own licensed version of the drug.
Since the patented drugs are premeasured and the compounded ones need to be drawn up at the correct dose from a vial before being injected, poison control centers that receive overdose calls cannot say with certainty that the calls are related to the compounded versions, but they suspect that is largely the case. A dose error happens to some people.

According to Dr. Joseph Lambson, director of the New Mexico Poison and Drug Information Center, his team handled a call where that was the situation. When the 37-year-old woman started taking the medication, she inadvertently gave herself a milliliter rather than 0.1 milliliter, which was a ten-fold dosage.

A prescribed dose is usually smaller at first and increases with subsequent doses as the patient gets used to the medication.
In a June 2023 report published in the Journal of the American Pharmacy Association, Lambson and associates discussed that case as well as others.
The Missouri Poison Center’s director told CNN that in 2021, they received 28 calls regarding semaglutide. They had received 94 calls for 2023 by the end of October.

“Some affected people were hospitalized with symptoms including vomiting, severe nausea, and abdominal pain,” according to reports. Nevertheless, the majority of cases were treated with intravenous fluids and antiemetic drugs.

The following are signs of a semaglutide overdose, per the Missouri Poison Center:
feeling woozy, unsteady, or lightheaded.

Most of the time, patients are sent home to recover after receiving intravenous fluids to rehydrate them, along with antiemetic medication. However, in certain cases, hospitalization was necessary.
