S A D : Mental Health Professionals Remind People Now

During the winter, mental health professionals remind people about S.A.D.

 

Iowa’s Davenport (KWQC) According to mental health professionals, “Seasonal Affective Disorder,” or S.A.D., is a common condition that people experience in the fall and winter when they don’t feel like themselves overall.

When this occurs, the person temporarily exhibits symptoms of major depression, according to Matthew Martenson, owner of QC Counselor.

“Things like losing interest in the things we used to find enjoyable, hypersomnolence, sleeping excessively, the potential to gain or lose weight, melancholy, and depression, that happen almost every day,” explained Martenson.

 

Like seasonal conditions, S.A.D. can be brought on by a significant change in a person’s routine, according to Richard Whittaker, CEO of Vera French Community Health Center.

 

“People who work three shifts, literally working through the night and then attempting to sleep during the day, after working a first or second shift. They may occasionally experience issues with their natural body rhythms and sleep patterns. Whittaker added, “And that can set off seasonal affective disorder.”

The staff at Vera French Community Health Center estimates that one in five people will at some point in their lives suffer from a “Seasonal Affective Disorder.” According to Whittaker, there are two common ways to treat SAD: using light therapy or increasing vitamin D in some way.

According to Martenson, engaging in enjoyable activities is crucial for lifting oneself out of a rut.

“I advise people to make something akin to a seasonal toolkit. Thus, something that they can utilize to give their days purpose and significance through the things that are significant to them.

 

This may be the time of year that I spend more time with friends and family; perhaps we will go out to games together.
