Wegovy Overdoses Are Happening, According to Poison Control Data

The active component of well-known weight-loss medications Ozempic and Wegovy, semaglutide, is the reason why more and more Americans are contacting poison control centers.

The majority of these calls seem to be about possible semaglutide overdoses and may be related to an increase in compounded versions of the medication, which have doses that differ significantly from the recommended dosage and have not been safety tested.

Novo Nordisk, a Danish pharmaceutical company, developed semaglutide. The Food and Drug Administration approved it in 2017 to treat type 2 diabetes under the brand name Ozempic.

A higher dose version was later approved in 2021 to treat obesity under the brand name Wegovy.

(Ozempic is also occasionally prescribed off-label to help with weight loss). Wegovy has helped patients in clinical trials lose an average of 15% of their starting weight, which is significantly more than what is usually achieved with diet and exercise on their own or with older obesity medications.

Still, there are always possible risks and adverse effects associated with medical treatments. People will often have gastrointestinal problems, such as diarrhea and vomiting, even when taking semaglutide as prescribed; however, these symptoms usually go away over time. Furthermore, it appears that inadvertent drug abuse is also causing harm to people.

A report detailing an increase in calls to poison control related to semaglutide was released by CNN on Wednesday. Nearly 3,000 of these calls were made to America’s Poison Centers nationwide between January and November of this year, which represents an apparent 1,500% increase in reports since 2019.

According to Kait Brown, clinical managing director of America’s Poison Centers, “it’s usually someone who maybe took a double dose or took the wrong dose.” Brown made this observation to CNN.

Wegovy and Ozempic are both supplied in pre-filled pens that are used to administer the medication once a week subcutaneously; Ozempic pens have adjustable doses.

The likelihood of overdoses should be reduced thanks to this design. However, authorities believe that a portion of these poisoning calls may be related to compounding pharmacies’ customized semaglutide formulations, which might not have these safety precautions.

“I believe that there are more opportunities for errors to occur whenever we have to rely on a patient to determine the appropriate dosage, to draw up, and then administer,” Brown stated. These products, which are occasionally misrepresented as “generic” semaglutide, might contain unapproved base ingredient formulations that haven’t been put through safety and efficacy testing.

The FDA states that pharmacies should not use these unapproved formulations to produce drugs in shortage, even though compounded pharmacies are permitted to do so. For years, supplies of Wegovy and Ozempic have been intermittently affected by shortages.

The agency has taken legal action against multiple distributors of compounded semaglutide and has issued clear warnings to consumers to avoid using these products. Similar legal actions have been taken by Novo Nordisk against spas and other vendors.

However, because compounded semaglutide is usually much less expensive, it will probably continue to be a desirable option for many. Without insurance, Wegovy can cost more than $1,000 per month.

Insurance is frequently not offered by private businesses and is not permitted by payers such as Medicare. In contrast, compounded semaglutide may cost less than one-third of that amount.
